WINE REGION
Niagara Peninsula
Country Canada

Niagara Peninsula is the largest and the oldest viticultural area with the biggest wine production located southern shores of Lake Ontario of Canada. It is the Icewine heaven with the vastest production anywhere in the world. The Icewine is the reason for the dominant plantations of Riesling and Vidal grapes making this lusciously sweet wine. The Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir are the other two very popular grape varieties starting to be internationally recognisable for the cool climate characteristics of the region. The climate is quite unique because the summers are hot enough to ripen the grapes and the winters are cold enough to freeze them each year as the lake is playing the role of moderator of the temperatures. The soils are glacial very rich in iron with sand and limestone in various part of the region. The region has set a standard for making one of the best Icewines in the world.
